How did you become a personal trainer? What other careers have you contemplated?

I always had an interest in fitness from a young age. I am heavily involved in playing football (also known as soccer). I was working as a mechanic and decided to study personal training. During my mechanic apprenticeship I did some part-time PT and once I’d finished the apprenticeship I decided to jump to full-time personal training! I started personal training back in 2013. I have always been passionate about fitness and enjoy helping people reach their goals.

What has been your biggest fitness/sporting moment?

For me, my biggest fitness moments are shared with clients when I witness them achieve their long-term goals or overcome an obstacle they may face. It is very rewarding to see all their hard work come to fruition.

What has been your most challenging physical experience?

Coming back to fitness after a knee ligament tear.man supervising man on Skierg machine

How do you motivate clients who are struggling to complete/ commit to a workout?

Finding out their ‘why’ and using this to build clear goals and encourage them on the way.

What have you learnt in your years of training other people?

I believe I have learnt how to communicate with different personalities and age brackets. I’ve also developed different strategies to deal with, and improve on, injuries while still progressing towards fitness goals.

Who is your fitness idol? Why?

Steven Gerrard. I’m a massive football and Liverpool fan. Gerrard played at the highest level and always scored important goals. He is now proving to be a successful coach, too.

What is one exercise/skill you wish you could do/have?

More flexibility.man training two women on stationary bikes

How did you become a personal trainer?
I initially trained with Gary at Recharged for a while. One day he said “You would be a great personal trainer (PT) – you should give it a go”. Before I knew it, I had completed my PT course and was training clients. That was approximately 8 years and thousands of PT sessions ago.

What has been your biggest fitness/sporting moment?
Training myself to compete in triathlons.

What has been your most challenging physical experience?
Overcoming a shoulder reconstruction operation to be able to train and play golf to an acceptable standard.

How do you motivate clients who are struggling to complete/commit to a workout?
I remind clients of why they do PT and the long-term benefits of being fit and healthy.

What have you learnt in your years of training other people?
How to connect with clients on all levels and be aware of their training needs. How to keep sessions interesting.

Who is your fitness idol? Why?
That would be Tiger Woods. Not for his off-course antics, but for his commitment to training to such a high level to help him be No. 1 in the world. Tiger endured numerous knee and back surgeries, then trained and returned to golf to win major tournaments. He was also the first ever billionaire golfer.

How did you become a personal trainer? What other careers have you contemplated?

I’ve always been a lover of sport and fitness. At the age of 20, while driving a courier truck for a construction supply company I heard a radio ad for he Australian Institute of Fitness. Within a week I was enrolled in a 12-month full-time course.

What is your biggest fitness/sporting moment?

Running a marathon was one of the most physically and mentally demanding moments of my life. So after three of them in consecutive years I needed a break from them. Five years later, I’ve signed up for my fourth in mid 2021.

What has been your most challenging physical experience?
Marathons.

How do you motivate clients who are struggling to complete/ commit to a workout?

Building trust in each other. Our clients start on all different fitness levels and we need to train at different intensities. After a few weeks of regular exercise we find the sessions begin to flow well, one our clients get an understanding of what we’re about, and their induvial fitness/ strength can handle it.

What have you learnt in the last 12 years of training other people?

Every person is different, and every person has something they are dealing with in life. Exercise and feeling good within yourself helps them face adversity. Consistency is key with becoming fitter, stronger and healthier. Maintaining a safe, clean and professional space for all of our clients makes everyone feel like they can be themselves and never judged. May of our clients a nervous when they begin this journey, so we make sure they feel welcomed right away.man running in a park

You might not want to hear this, but spot training isn’t what you think it is. Yes you can target specific muscle groups and build up bulging biceps or a peachy butt however that involves a tightly managed diet and exercise combination. If you are searching for a specific thigh gap or an 8-pack then it is probably easier to develop body positivity and love your unique shape than use spot exercises to chase someone else’s body shape. Recharged Personal Trainers understand the science behind body composition and won’t promise results we can’t deliver.

Understanding your leg muscles.
woman doing yoga on a beach

The legs are made up of interconnected muscle groups such as the quadriceps femoris, the central rectus femoris, and the three vasti: the vastus intermedius, medialis, and lateralis. You might be more familiar with terms like quads, glutes and calves. Bulking up muscle means working with a calorie surplus and converting those calories to muscle. Stripping fat means eating to a calorie deficit but maintaining enough protein to preserve muscle.

If you want toned, shapely legs you need to balance your workouts across all the muscle groups and above all, SQUAT!

Squat till you drop.

man squatting with barbell

Squats can come in many forms but they all leave you trembling if you do them right. A personal trainer will lead you through weighted squats using a cage or barbell and offer complementary exercises like leg press, bulgarian lunges and crab walks. Resistance bands are a great way to keep up your inner thigh workout at home. You can buy them online or at Big W or K-Mart for a few dollars and then just google ‘resistance band exercises’ or ‘booty band exercises’ to find some inspiration. Pinterest and TikTok have some great ideas too! Make sure you keep your trainer informed of your home routine so they can balance out areas of strength and weakness in your one-on-one sessions.

Your inner thigh workout needs the support of your whole body to be successful. Luckily we are here to support you too.

woman in white shirt holding money to the eyeRecharged Personal Training cost $60 for 45 minutes if you want a tailored 1 on 1 session in our private studio. You can team up with a friend or partner and do a 2 on 1 session (two clients and one trainer) for $35 each. We also offer 3 on 1 sessions for $25 each for a truly affordable session without compromising on technique and focus. If you are beginning a new fitness program, Recharged Personal Training recommends an initial 12-week period of 2 sessions a week to get your body accustomed to the program. You can then drop back to 1 session and supplement with our group classes or a home workout routine.

What makes up personal trainer prices?

Price and value have an interesting relationship with fitness. A gym membership may sell itself as $15 a week however if you don’t get out of bed, how much are you really saving? Personal training delivers one-on-one personal accountability. You book the time, you follow the instructions, you leave stronger and fitter every time. Unlike home gyms, the equipment in our studio is professional quality and well maintained. Unlike super gyms, we watch and guide you through the exercise program so your posture and performance stays in the challenge zone. Without micro adjustments you can easily injure yourself or plateau in a comfortable but boring program. Work harder and smarter with our tailored personal training!

Are personal trainers expensive?

Value is a relative concept! If I told you it costs just $60 to feel strong, sleep well and feel proud of yourself I’m sure you’d want to know more. A $10 bottle of wine or tub of ice cream makes feel-good promises but doesn’t deliver week after week! We want you to feel great about your session before, during and after. When you decide to start your training program we will work hard to meet your budget. This might mean teaming you up with a 3 on 1 training program to keep costs down to start with or you might decide that a 1 on 1 session and a 10-class pass for our group fitness classes is the best value. The investment of better sleep, more energy and a healthier body quickly justifies the high quality service you receive. Don’t sleep on it, start your new life today!

word success on blackboardThere is one foolproof method to getting fit in 2021: it’s exercise. You need to do a little bit as often as possible. 30 minutes three times a week is better than 2 hours once a fortnight. You know this!

Did you know the 3 ways personal trainers get results?

Using a personal trainer offers 3 times the value of working out by yourself. The reasons are:

  • You will work harder. Your trainer will always push you harder than you push yourself. Having a safe, experienced professional oversee your workout means you’ll get an extra few reps when you need them. You are also protected from injury as your form is corrected by a second set of eyes.

  • External accountability. If you have someone waiting for you, you turn up. No matter how tired or annoyed or over it you might feel, I promise the days you have training will be your most consistent exercise schedule. The most well-intentioned New Year’s fitness plan will mostly look like a downhill slope. Skip the fantasy and book in reality with us!

  • Results. Probably the most motivating force behind personal training is that it gets results. If you begin a workout plan now, even if you start doing zero push-ups you’ll be doing at least 5 by mid-year. Once your energy improves, lifestyle and diet changes become easier to manipulate. What are you waiting for?

Set a goal and see the results for yourself.

The best fitness goals are SMART goals:

  • Specific: what change do you want to see? Increased strength? Endurance? Weight loss? Increased skills in a particular sport?

  • Measurable: Will it look like increased weights on specific exercises? Longer endurance or faster speed on the rowing machine? Cm’s lost around the waist? Let us know so we can track, measure and work with you.

  • Attainable: what is your current fitness benchmark and what are reasonable improvements? Reducing time or increasing weights are reasonable. Making the team for the next Olympics may be a bit ambitious (or maybe not!).

  • Relevant: If you don’t want to lose weight, don’t make it a goal. Your goals are personal however share them with us to make sure we are tailoring your fitness program accordingly.

  • Time-bound: Stay accountable with regular check-in’s. Ideally you have 3, 6 and 12 month fitness goals we can work towards and celebrate when they are achieved.

If you want to see the impressive changes a dedicated fitness regime can yield, let us help you set the benchmark and track your improvements.

man climbing fake rock wall in orange helmetWhat is Cross Training?

Cross training is simply a way to use different modes of exercise to focus on or enhance a particular area. Examples of cross training might be:

  • Weighted leg lifts, flexibility routines and stamina-focused cardio workouts for dancers.

  • Modified squats and lunges to work up to unassisted pistol squats or improve soccer agility.

  • Building shoulder strength through weighted and body weight exercises to reach a pull-up goal or improve your rock-climbing.

  • A focus on leg strength and endurance exercises to prepare for a long hike.

Here are 3 ways cross training can help you reach your fitness goals:

I want to do a triathlon

Many New Year’s Resolutions involve a feat of athletic glory. To reach this glory with a minimum of pain and injury you can partner with a personal trainer to develop areas of weakness and ensure your technique is effective. As well as your face to face session, Recharged personal trainers can set ‘homework’ or challenges to keep you motivated and accountable. There are a number of fun runs throughout the year where you can be part of our crew before you unleash the new, fitter, you.

How do I get better at surfing/ skating/ roller skating?

two skateboards stacked on top of each otherIf you are a passionate surfer/ skater you know the urge to keep improving and trying new moves. A lateral approach to improving is to use cross-training to develop skill-specific muscle groups. This could mean:

  • deep squats with weights for strength,

  • resistance bands for endurance and

  • bosu balls for balance.

Building core stability and overall strength will help you pull off your next ‘shoot the duck’ or ‘smith grind’ even faster.

Can I fix a sore back?

Chronic back pain is familiar to many however long term problems require long term solutions. Improving posture through cross-training has been shown to alleviate chronic pain as well as prevent further issues. Our personal trainers are skilled at identifying ways to work with your condition and adapt workouts to meet your needs. We welcome suggestions from your supporting GP and/ or physiotherapist and our one-on-one sessions can be a cost effective way to support your physiotherapy.

Message us with a short summary of your fitness goals and we will set up a studio tour!

If you aren’t getting targeted ads for resistance bands, you will now. These training bands are stretchy latex or fabric you can use to get targeted, deep muscle workouts. With the correct technique your workouts produce a deep burn and targeted strength workout to condition your body using precise movements.

How do I get started with training bands?

OR you can outsource the expertise and experience to establish a good workout routine to our resistance band star, TC!
