Choosing a gym around me can be tricky if you aren’t sure what you want. The best way to decide is to search “gyms around me” or “gym + your suburb” and rank them based on your needs.

Some questions to ask yourself are:

  • Do I want to be instructed in proper technique and shown how to do a range of machines, free weights and bodyweight exercises? If yes, you want a personal trainer.

  • Do I want to work out with other people in a group fitness class? If yes, you want group fitness classes.

  • Do I want to commit to a regular training time or be flexible and spontaneous? If you want to be spontaneous, a 24 hour gym will suit you.two women holding heavy weights in front of them for the studio challenge

What do you want from your gym?

Lots of gyms will offer shower facilities, child-minding, class timetables and personal training. In the 15 years we have been training clients, we’ve realised the two most important two things your gym needs to have are:

  • A convenient location

  • Exercises you want to do

If you are highly self motivated then finding a gym with the machines or classes you like will be fairly easy and you can explore the cheapest or most convenient option. If you need support staying accountable then you need a personal trainer or a gym buddy you don’t want to let down.personal trainer helping woman on leg press machine

Set up the habit and review in 6 weeks

Committing to a 6 week program of personal training, group fitness classes or a combination will make sure you get the results you deserve for the money you spend. It doesn’t have to be a formal program- just make the commitment. Until you get the positive feedback from your body from consistent exercise, it can feel hard to make the time. Making a financial commitment and setting a goal for 6 weeks gives you a measurable, time bound goal which you can review at the end to make sure you have made the right choice. Don’t lock yourself into a contract if you haven’t established a committed exercise routine yet. All you will achieve is paying ‘fitness tax’ to avoid going. • a search engine they may be looking at popular sites which are big clubs or web savvy businesses or

  • great online reviews will tell you important details but are often dependant on large client numbers marketing campaigns or

Location is important so up to a 30 minute drive is reasonable, plus you can expand to gyms enroute to your office or shopping centres or schools if you have kids. Type “personal trainer near me” or “gym near me” into your search engine and see what comes up. Check the website, reviews and social media if they have a presence. This is the first step.

Notice what is important to you.

The best gym near you will be as unique as you are. When we checked with our clients they stated the best gym had:

  • “A trainer who understood my goals and kept me accountable”

  • “Good parking”

  • “Great variety- I get bored easily”

  • “Kid-friendly so I can work out while they play”

  • “Showers so I can get to work without going home”

  • “Affordable so I can be consistent”

At Recharged Personal Training we meet all those needs (which is why they are our clients) but this may help you decide how to decide on the best gym for you.

Start at the beginning and grow.

Even a bad gym is better than not working out at all. If you aren’t sure where you want to go, try them all! Doing a casual session at three or four different gyms will save you way more money in the long run than a discount membership at a place you hate. You may decide to mix and match personal training with group fitness classes to sample a range of exercise techniques before you develop a taste for your own perfect blend.

If you are thinking about it you are ready to begin. Reach out to us and have a go, no obligations. mother and child in a gym exercising in front of a mirror

There are two factors which determine the success of your fitness instruction: you and your instructor. Personal trainers are dedicated to providing balance, variety and challenge to your workout. There are lots of amazing ways to work your muscles however make sure you balance the major muscle groups. It’s also vital to keep adjusting your effort to push yourself. Here are three things your fitness instruction needs:

  1. Proper technique

The difference between an effective injury and an injury is often technique. Often there are subtle ways you need to engage your shoulders or engage your core to protect your back. Pushing through a heavy set using poor technique can even create distinctive postural defects such as “poke neck”- a jutting chicken style head alignment. Don’t waste your precious time, use a personal trainer to keep your form perfect and embed great habits!

  1. Ambition

Without clear goals you may find yourself watching the clock and waiting to leave. Use your fitness instruction to set goals and use them to hone your effort in each exercise. Doing this will yield better results physically and mentally. Your goals need to be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. An example would be moving from a 61cm box jump to a 76cm box jump. You may work up to 76cm by using ankle weights at 61cm so that when you remove them you fly up to 76cm! Think about your goals so you are ready to share them with your personal trainer.

  1. Variety

Boredom leads to sloppy technique which leads to injury. When you are trying something new your attention naturally finds focus in technique. Good fitness instruction will balance new exercises with areas of focus so you can see gains in familiar exercises and develop strength and stamina through fresh exercises. Fitness instruction keeps you balanced in the basics while making incremental gains through targeted, novel routines. mother and child in a gym exercising in front of a mirror

With so many affordable gym memberships and home gym set ups, not to mention free online workouts through YouTube and apps, why would you need a personal gym trainer or personal trainer? The simple answer is: you don’t lack equipment, you lack accountability.

This is not a diss. Most of us have trouble getting the motivation to move through the discomfort of exercise to the endorphins we’ve been promised. The way to stay on track and get the most from your workout is a personal trainer. Here are three reasons you should try one, today:personal trainer massaging woman

1. Consistency

Just one workout a week with a personal trainer, done consistently, will yield results. You might be running, walking or cycling everyday- keep it up! You may just plan to do something every week then life gets in the way and you are too tired. Either way, your routine (or lack of it) may be stalling your growth. A personal trainer ensures you are at the gym and doing your whole body workout to ensure every muscle group is firing. Too tired? Don’t worry! You will feel an energised fatigue at the end and relax on the couch that night satisfied with your hard work.

2. Challenge

A personal trainer gauges your ability on the day and sets your workout just above your comfort zone. If you are working out solo it can be easy to plateau. Hopefully each run/ walk/ cycle you add a few sprints or choose a new hill to summit. If not, you may not be getting the maximum benefit from your effort. Skip the mental struggle of trying to increase your challenges and let us do it!

3. Monitoring

Do you set yourself fitness goals? These are essential to make sure your workouts have purpose. You may want to increase cardiovascular fitness, achieve 10 perfect pushups or see definition in your arms. Whatever your goal, it needs to be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. If you are starting from zero you may aim for five perfect pushups in three months. Then ten in six months. Making these goals the focus helps you stay on track and soon you can see the results of your hard work. woman doing battle ropes while personal trainer times her

I have a confession. I’ve been training with Recharged for over 13 years but I got complacent. I had put on 10kg over two years and it wasn’t shifting. Incremental increases over time. How did this happen?

It wasn’t hard to work out. I’d been through COVID then studying then working and I realised I was shoving bags of chips in my mouth washed down with red wine every night. Christmas 2021 was the final straw- I felt disgusting. I’d kept up my bi-weekly training but the things I was doing outside the gym were sabotaging me. So I asked for help.

How I lost 10kg in 3 months and gained my focus.

I knew my eating patterns were dysfunctional and unhealthy. I spoke to Bryce, the nutritional expert, in-between sessions who quickly set me up with some macronutrient goals. I started tracking what I ate and made simple adjustments every day until my goals were in target. I wasn’t hungry anymore! I was eating soft cheese and smoothies and quinoa bowls with glee knowing I was fueling my body in a positive way.

Then I focused on my attitude in my personal training. Gary is upbeat and insists on a positive attitude in sessions because that approach gets results and lifts up the other people training around me. I stopped whining (mostly) and got on with it. We added some extra exercises to work towards athletic goals I had in my chosen sport (skating) which kept me motivated.

It works.

I genuinely thought I was too old to get really fit and healthy. I believed I’d crossed into middle age (40) and had to accept the ‘natural’ changes in my body. Not true. I had to accept that wine and chips are not the foundation of a great lifestyle. So I gave up alcohol. At first this was very hard and I was extremely cranky. I slept a lot. Then I realised I had been pushing through my natural rhythms for years and not getting the rest I needed. After a few weeks I was waking refreshed and energised. The yearning to ‘zone out’ with booze became focused in books, movies, games and walking the dog.

I was free! And the results show.a woman in gym gear in january and then in march

Your goals are your own.

Not everyone wants to – or needs to- lose weight.

Bodies come in many shapes and sizes and they adapt to the lifestyle of the person who uses them. You might love gardening or rock climbing or cycling. You may be short or tall. Your body may have injuries or limitations which require adaptations. These aren’t barriers, they are features to be managed. But I hope you don’t fight with yourself the way I did for so long before you make the changes you may secretly want.

If you hear someone say they want to ‘shred’ or ‘get toned’ they are talking about lean muscle. Lean muscle is muscle with very little fat around it, creating a more defined muscle shape (less padding!). If you want ripped (visible) abdominal muscles or bulging biceps you need to build the muscle underneath through weights AND maximise visible definition through a strict diet. There is no such thing as spot training, it takes low overall body fat to achieve muscle definition and show off ‘lean muscle”. woman in black and white photo holding up her top to show off toned abs

The secret to looking toned…

The quickest way to look toned is… dehydration. Bodybuilders and models often achieve their idealised look through very brief periods of dehydration for competition or a photo shoot before going back to more realistic water and food consumption.

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND DEHYDRATION.

Save yourself the headache and false impression of fitness- choose a path of moderation to increase muscle mass and decrease body fat. We can tailor you a program of personal training and group fitness classes to have your muscles working hard to build that lean tissue complemented with cardio to burn fat. Feeling good is better than looking good (and you can have both).

Forget the artificial staging, complicated studio lighting and manufactured perfection of athletic magazines and Instagram hotties. You could look the same with a photographer, a bottle of bronzer and some editing software. At Recharged we keep it real with fun workouts for everybody, every week so your head, heart and body are in sync. Feeling good about the positive things you do with your body will naturally lead to more motivation to keep up great habits. Recently our resident nutritional guru Bryce ran a seminar on the common mistakes and core knowledge you need to take charge of your nutritional needs. Our clients work hard in their sessions but want to maximise their results, nutrition adjustment is the next step. Bryce gathered the misconceptions of the room and set to work replacing myths with proven strategies to transform your eating habits.

Nutrition misunderstandings. Macros explained.

In his seminar Bryce broke down what calories actually are and how they relate to the three macronutrients: protein, fat and carbohydrates (and the effect of alcohol). Each one of these effects the body differently and to achieve optimal results you need a tailored meal plan with target ratios of each macronutrient. bowl of tofu and greens

Common mistakes:

The main barriers to people getting results when adjusting their diets are:

  • Counting calories but not balancing macronutrients
  • Poor timing of foods (not just what you eat, but when)
  • Understanding food labels.

Bryce worked with each attendee to broadly establish their nutrition goals, develop a caloric intake number and allocate ideal macronutrients to assist each person in meal planning. The freedom in this style of flexible eating is that you decide which foods help you reach those macronutrients.

When can I attend a seminar?

The next seminar will be scheduled in a few weeks to check in with the clients who set up their goals and make any adjustments if needed. If this sounds like something you are interested in then you can email or text us your details to express interest or book in for a private session and get your tailored meal plan right now!

If you are after a fitness program we first need to understand what fitness means to you:

  • Do you have a particular goal in mind such as a triathlon?

  • Do 3 pull ups or 5 push ups easily?
