Making the decision to pick a gym usually comes down to price and convenience. But what if I told you the private gyms near me turn out to be better value than low cost, low motivation chain gyms? Private gyms are small studios with a personal trainer who offers a customised program and incentivises you to work to your limit. Building muscle fibre and endurance requires incremental gains however the risk of injury is high if you aren’t using proper technique. A personal trainer protects you from injury and excuses. So when are you giving us a call?woman rolling up exercise mate

An average session for above average results

What can you expect in a personal training session? On arrival you check-in and wash your hands (COVID safe!) before starting a 3-5 minute cardio warmup. This might be the assault bike, rowing machine or stationary bike. A few warm up scratches gets your body prepared before your trainer guides through a tailored circuit of weights, resistance band and body weight exercises. Each session targets your major muscle groups but uses different exercises to do so so you don’t get bored. Cardio breaks help to burn energy and give your body a break from intense effort.woman using battle ropes

We are cheerleaders for your body

There is a reason some people get better results than others from the gym and it’s not just will power. Mindset is huge when maintaining a fitness program and you can’t expect to wake up every morning ready to run a marathon. We make the struggle easier by setting a set time or times each week to turn up and get that workout done. Our positive approach and personalised workout will remind your body how good it feels to move and have you bouncing out of the private studio with a sense of achievement. You can’t have a bad workout with us, all you have to do is show up. woman leaning against the wall with a fit ball

The simple rule for weight loss is to create a calorie deficit where you consume less than you burn. There are many different ways to achieve this. At Recharged Personal Training, quality of life is just as important as getting that balance right. We can provide you with high-quality, targeted personal training once or twice a week (or more if you want!) but what else could you be doing outside those hours? Walking is easy to integrate into your everyday life and brings surprising results. However, there are some caveats:pink trainer shoes walking

It must be everyday

Consistency is the cornerstone to walking for weight loss. Remember in the 2000s when everyone wore pedometers and tried to hit 10,000 steps a day? That’s both an amusing retro memory AND the correct attitude. You want to move significantly more than you currently do (unless you already walk for a living), so first understand that this will take time (and yes, we do mean literal time, since walking places is slower than driving or using an electric scooter). Also make sure you use a pedometer, Fitbit, Apple watch or some kind of tracking device for external confirmation you’re actually doing as much walking as you think. Set a goal of 10,000 steps a day and see if you can keep it up for a month!man silhouette against the ocean

It must be enjoyable

Without a positive feedback loop, it’s unlikely you will turn this effort into an ongoing habit. So in pursuit of those 10,000 steps, plan how you will enjoy the exercise. Some ideas include:

  • Drive to a beautiful natural setting, for example a beach, bushland or the waterfront.
  • Bring a friend to stay motivated and keep you company.
  • Walk your dog or someone else’s (thus doing a good deed at the same time).
  • Create a playlist of your favourite songs or new music you want to explore.
  • Listen to audiobooks or podcasts.
  • Bring a journal and record your thoughts at the halfway point. Tune into how you feel and think after being energised by walking.friends hiking in the bush

It must be part of a holistic health plan

All that said, walking is just one part of taking care of yourself. A positive mindset, nutritious food and loving connections with friends and family are also key facets of interconnected physical and mental health. To take care of only the body is to miss out on the point of health, which is feeling good so we can enjoy our lives. At Recharged Personal Training we set realistic, achievable goals and work with you to make the journey to meet them satisfying while sweaty. Health is a continuum and walking is a literal and figurative way to stay on track for the rest of your life.

So what are you waiting for? Lace up those shoes and head out.

In the meantime, share your favourite walking tracks – both physical and on your playlist – with us!

man stretching in snow

Cold-weather exercise can be a challenge when you are used to sub-tropical workouts which keeps your muscles warm, but you will survive winter if you MAKE SURE YOU KEEP STRETCHING. It can be yoga, a few ad-hoc warm-up or cool-down stretches or even a Cirque du Soleil-worthy routine – but you must stretch. And, while it may seem like a take-it-or-leave-it add-on to your exercise, if you skip the stretch you’re both cheating yourself out of a chance to enjoy all those wonderful endorphins you created and depriving your body of a gentle transition from high energy to everyday movement. There are a range of reasons to stretch from mindfulness to preventing injury and maintaining a good range of motion.

winter stretches

What does stretching do?

In the same way strength and endurance have their purpose in training, we also need to ensure our muscles elongate and provide the full range of motion. That’s where a dedicated stretching routine comes in – targeting the major muscle groups to help keep them limber and protect your joints. Suffer from lower back pain? Combine strength training and stretching to strengthen and support the area. Work at a desk all day? You need to gently stretch your spine with supported backbends to undo the sad C-spine which develops while you’re slumped at a screen! As for yoga, it lives up to the hype when it comes to connecting breath and body through a mindfulness practice. Jump on YouTube and start right now or join us on a Saturday with our delightful instructor Anne. Whatever you decide, start today!

How long should I stretch for?

A little bit of stretching every day is better than only doing a one-hour yoga class once a week (although you should do that too). But what should it involve? Well salute to the sun is a great beginner vinyasa (flowing yoga) routine, or you can Google for stretching ideas to suit your circumstances, whether you’re running, surfing, pregnant or confined to the office. The key is to listen to your body and follow what feels right. You’ll soon start to identify your preferred type of stretching!

In our personal training sessions we make sure you warm up and cool down appropriately so take this practice home and start and end each day with a gentle stretch. You won’t regret it!

Stretching is the prologue and closing credits of any exercise regimen – don’t skip it!

Your goals.

What does a fitness trainer do?

A fitness trainer maps out specific training goals for when you’re working towards a particular goal, be it a triathlon, team sports or an adventure holiday such as hiking the Andes. Your trainer will identify the functional strength and mobility you need and create a program to develop those areas. Our Recharged trainers have years of experience working with athletes, and have guided their own athletic achievements, giving them the expertise to create evidence-based, cutting-edge regimens. Book yourself in today!

What does a fitness coach do?

A fitness coach is the person who helps you establish and maintain your regular exercise routine, in circumstances such as coming back from injury or committing to better health. Our Recharge team members set up an exercise program that fits your ability and, during workouts, will make small adjustments to ensure you stay right on the edge of challenge. Coaching sessions even just once a week can make the difference between feeling too tired to exercise versus pushing through the fatigue for that sense of satisfaction and boost of endorphins at the end.Man holding barbell aloft covering the face of another man in the background.

A personal trainer is both

A personal trainer is both a fitness trainer and a fitness coach (and occasionally a pest for your own good). They’re someone who can respond to your energy and ability on the day to help get the most out of you. When you commit to a weekly or bi-weekly training program, you invest in your most valuable asset: your health. And at Recharged, we’re here to help all the way, with trainers who can remind you of the bigger fitness picture when the lure of the snooze button seems more enticing. Don’t leave us hanging! Make the decision today to improve the rest of your life.

How did you become a personal trainer? What other careers have you contemplated?

I always had an interest in fitness from a young age. I am heavily involved in playing football (also known as soccer). I was working as a mechanic and decided to study personal training. During my mechanic apprenticeship I did some part-time PT and once I’d finished the apprenticeship I decided to jump to full-time personal training! I started personal training back in 2013. I have always been passionate about fitness and enjoy helping people reach their goals.

What has been your biggest fitness/sporting moment?

For me, my biggest fitness moments are shared with clients when I witness them achieve their long-term goals or overcome an obstacle they may face. It is very rewarding to see all their hard work come to fruition.

What has been your most challenging physical experience?

Coming back to fitness after a knee ligament tear.man supervising man on Skierg machine

How do you motivate clients who are struggling to complete/ commit to a workout?

Finding out their ‘why’ and using this to build clear goals and encourage them on the way.

What have you learnt in your years of training other people?

I believe I have learnt how to communicate with different personalities and age brackets. I’ve also developed different strategies to deal with, and improve on, injuries while still progressing towards fitness goals.

Who is your fitness idol? Why?

Steven Gerrard. I’m a massive football and Liverpool fan. Gerrard played at the highest level and always scored important goals. He is now proving to be a successful coach, too.

What is one exercise/skill you wish you could do/have?

How did you become a personal trainer?
I initially trained with Gary at Recharged for a while. One day he said “You would be a great personal trainer (PT) – you should give it a go”. Before I knew it, I had completed my PT course and was training clients. That was approximately 8 years and thousands of PT sessions ago.

What has been your biggest fitness/sporting moment?
Training myself to compete in triathlons.

What has been your most challenging physical experience?
Overcoming a shoulder reconstruction operation to be able to train and play golf to an acceptable standard.

How do you motivate clients who are struggling to complete/commit to a workout?
I remind clients of why they do PT and the long-term benefits of being fit and healthy.

What have you learnt in your years of training other people?
How to connect with clients on all levels and be aware of their training needs. How to keep sessions interesting.

Who is your fitness idol? Why?
That would be Tiger Woods. Not for his off-course antics, but for his commitment to training to such a high level to help him be No. 1 in the world. Tiger endured numerous knee and back surgeries, then trained and returned to golf to win major tournaments. He was also the first ever billionaire golfer.

How did you become a personal trainer? What other careers have you contemplated?

I’ve always been a lover of sport and fitness. At the age of 20, while driving a courier truck for a construction supply company I heard a radio ad for he Australian Institute of Fitness. Within a week I was enrolled in a 12-month full-time course.

What is your biggest fitness/sporting moment?

Running a marathon was one of the most physically and mentally demanding moments of my life. So after three of them in consecutive years I needed a break from them. Five years later, I’ve signed up for my fourth in mid 2021.

What has been your most challenging physical experience?
Marathons.

How do you motivate clients who are struggling to complete/ commit to a workout?

Building trust in each other. Our clients start on all different fitness levels and we need to train at different intensities. After a few weeks of regular exercise we find the sessions begin to flow well, one our clients get an understanding of what we’re about, and their induvial fitness/ strength can handle it.

What have you learnt in the last 12 years of training other people?

Every person is different, and every person has something they are dealing with in life. Exercise and feeling good within yourself helps them face adversity. Consistency is key with becoming fitter, stronger and healthier. Maintaining a safe, clean and professional space for all of our clients makes everyone feel like they can be themselves and never judged. May of our clients a nervous when they begin this journey, so we make sure they feel welcomed right away.man running in a park
