You might think the best personal trainer is the fittest, best looking one but that would be a mistake! Your personal trainer is there to motivate you so the best personal trainer is someone who will understand your barriers to exercise and your fitness goals to keep you turning up to your sessions. Use these three questions to make sure you are getting the right trainer for your mindset.

“How will you motivate me?”

Asking a trainer this gives you a sense of how willing they are to get to know you. If they answer straight away with a list of strategies such as regular text messages, phone calls, goal tracking charts etc. without first finding out why you are there, you may want to shop around for a better listener. Your personal trainer is your coach so they need to get a full understanding of why you are there, what you want to achieve, what has and hasn’t worked in the past and whether you are willing to do the work. We know from experience we can lead a client to weights but we can’t make them lift!

“How will we determine success?”

This is a tricky one because you need to know if you have a fixed goal in mind (“ want to do a chin up”) or a vague goal (“I want to be fitter”). Fixed goals are easier to determine- it may mean setting small achievable goals such as building up to 45kg on the lat pull-down within 3 months. Vague goals need to be redefined in a more specific way such as “in 6 weeks I want to shave 30 seconds off my rowing time” or “I want to work up to three cardio blocks per session”. Setting realistic, time marked goals is vital to feeling your training is having an impact.

“What will keep me accountable”

The best personal trainer is one who is kind and understanding but holds you to account. At Recharged Personal Training we implemented a policy to require 24 hours notice to cancel a session or you are charged. This may seem harsh however we saw a 70% increase in attendance. It’s common to wake up and not want to workout or finish a day at work and have no energy for the gym. Either way you are already tired, you might as well work out! Our trainer will remind you of your session and commit to being there on time and ready to work with you. You meet us with that same energy and you are guaranteed to succeed.
